<TOPIC 2> How to deliver a speech in public effectively

The reason for choosing the theme: One of the most popular purposes of studying English is “to become a proficient public speaker.” We have many opportunities for giving presentations and speeches at E’s/ESCO’s discussion sessions, so I believe this theme is of many people’s interest. When it comes to preparing for speeches, we tend to focus on the “structure” and “content,” but “methods of delivery” is a crucial perspective to consider. I hope you find it useful upon becoming a good English public speaker.

**The Four Methods of Delivery**
Do you feel comfortable making a speech in front of many people? Do you usually prepare a script for public speaking? How should we choose the way to deliver the message? Public speaking can be daunting for many, and preparing for the occasion and delivering the message are crucial for a less intimidating experience. Public speakers deliver their messages differently according to the situation. For example, the President of the United States gives speeches quite differently compared to someone making an opening remark at a casual dinner party.

According to the author, there are four methods of delivery. They are
1) Impromptu speaking,
2) Extemporaneous speaking,
3) Speaking from a manuscript, and
4) Speaking from memory.
Here are some excerpts from the article explaining each delivery methods.

**Impromptu speaking**
“Impromptu speaking is the presentation of a short message without advance preparation. Impromptu speeches often occur when someone is asked to ‘say a few words’ or give a toast on a special occasion.” This method is used when there is no time to prepare, and the speech is delivered on the fly.

**Extemporaneous speaking**
“Extemporaneous speaking is the presentation of a carefully planned and rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. By using notes rather than a full manuscript, the extemporaneous speaker can establish and maintain eye contact with the audience and assess how well they are understanding the speech as it progresses.” It is used when there is a moderate amount of time to prepare, and the speech is delivered with a set of keywords.

**Speaking from a manuscript**
“Manuscript speaking is the word-for-word iteration of a written message. In a manuscript speech, the speaker maintains his or her attention on the printed page except when using visual aids.” This method is chosen when there is sufficient time to prepare a full script.

**Speaking from memory**
“Memorized speaking is the rote recitation of a written message that the speaker has committed to memory. Actors, of course, recite from memory whenever they perform from a script in a stage play, television program, or movie scene. When it comes to speeches, memorization can be useful when the message needs to be exact and the speaker doesn’t want to be confined by notes.” This method is applicable when there is more than enough time to prepare.

The author introduces the four methods of delivery as tools to “help you balance between too much and too little formality when giving a public speech.” The author also points out at the outset that one of the major reasons for studying public speaking is “to learn ways to ‘connect’ with one’s audience and to increase one’s confidence in doing so.” The method of delivery affects how the speaker and the audience develop the sense of connection.

But then, it begs the question. How can we choose the best method of delivery for the given situation? Which method is the best one for me? How can we become proficient public speakers? Now, please discuss the following questions in your group.

**Discussion questions**

Q1.
Which delivery method are you most comfortable with, and why?

Q2.
What are your thoughts on speech delivery methods?
Please share a memorable speech experience or a favorite public speaker’s approach on how to deliver the speech.

Q3.
How do the four delivery methods differ? Discuss the pros and cons of each delivery method.

*Please include your analysis on how the method influences the impression that the audience get from the speech.

(For example, with impromptu speaking, one can give the impression that they are sincerely “communicating with” the audience instead of unilaterally “speaking to” them. However, the chances of miscommunication and/or misunderstandings might increase depending on their degree of familiarity with the topic.)

Q4.
Which delivery method is appropriate for a specific situation? Choose appropriate delivery methods for various scenarios and explain your choices.

*Please pick one or two situations from A to I and share your opinions.
*Feel free to demonstrate/act out some examples comparing different delivery methods.
*You are encouraged to share/add your own scenario ideas and personal experiences.

A. Giving a speech at a university graduation ceremony
B. Showing around some historical sites in Japan as an interpreter tour guide for foreign tourists
C. Explaining your campaign policies to the citizens on the street as a political candidate
D. Asking someone you like out on a date
E. Asking your special someone to marry you
